My name is Sophie Rippington, I am 23 and I have always had a passion for all kinds of animals. I have had many pets myself including gerbils, rabbits, fish and currently two cats. I have been pursuing a career in animal care and am taking part in multiple volunteer roles. I have been volunteering at the Moggery Rehoming Centre since February 2018 which is a cat rescue centre. Some of the cats there are affectionate but some are more cautious or feral. I have a room of cats to clean and play with every time I go on a Sunday morning. I always allow time to give the cats some attention. This role is where I was given the nickname ‘the cat whisperer’. A particularly scared cat lives in the room I clean. When I started there she had been there a year and no one had ever touched her. She spent a lot of time hiding. I was able to stroke her one day and I have been slowly helping her build up her confidence. She will now sit happily on my lap.
Another place I volunteer is at Bristol bat rescue. I have been learning to handle, feed and test fly the rescue bats they get in each week. I have experience with small animals that wriggle when being handled and need live food manually fed to them. I have been there since April 2018. Funnily enough they have a very shy cat who hides from visitors and other volunteers but every time I have gone she has come out of hiding and I’ve been able to stroke her.
I am also doing a part time animal care course on a Tuesday. They have many animals on the course that we are learning how to handle and care for including rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, mice, rats, degus, hedgehog, hamsters, tortoises, bearded dragons and snakes. I have so far performed health checks and fed the bearded dragons, tortoise, guinea pigs and rabbits. We will be performing more health check and feeding plans for all the animals listed here and I am excited to do so. I love most animals are not afraid to handle them. The only animal I am not very good with is spiders. I have caught live crickets, meal worms and locus to feed the bearded dragon and the bats.
I am also going to start volunteering on a Thursday at Chew Valley Animal Park. I am very excited to start and they have a huge range of animals that I will be caring for. I will get much more experience and I would like to build on that through pet sitting. I also need to earn some money while I’m gathering up all this experience to obtain my dream job in an animal care role.
Additional information I would really love more experience with dogs. I used to offer to walk dogs from the dogs home when I was younger and I used to go out with my grandad on walks with his Chow Chow. My living situation has never allowed me to own a dog where I could give it the full attention and care they deserve however I have always wanted one since I was little so any opportunity to care for a dog I’ll be grateful for.
I am avaliable for house sitting, dog walking and check ins with all kinds of pets. I am often around and can do most evenings. The only times I am not around is when I'm voluenteering with animals or at college. I am always avaliable fridays and saturday and most of wednesday, tuesdays and thursdays I can do evenings and Sundays any time from late afternoon.
Sophie was really good with our animals and they were very well looked after! Would recommend Sophie to anybody else looking for a pet sitter.
