I have done a professional Pet first aid course.
I will be offering 30 minute walks, one or two home visits and I will also be offering pet sitting in your home where where dog is more comfortable.
I grew up with family members having dogs and I would help look after them with walks. As I got a bit older I did a bit of puppy sitting for my uncle and aunt. Then a few years later when some of my siblings had moved out and got pets I helped with them. More so my sister's puppy which when I went away with my parents we took with us for a fun filled week. I have worked in the port for the last five years and am used to all weather conditions I enjoy being outside and I don't mind all weather conditions.
I have experience incorporating pet training into walks and when sitting a dog, and I take note of owner requests to incorporate commands and controls.
I am comfortable being assertive with difficult pets and will look at alternative options for enrichment for pets that are unable to socialise with other animals and/or prefer solo activities. For example I have used private dog fields that are enclosed for dogs that prefer solo activities.
If there is an emergency I will have the owners contact details and deal with the emergency in the first instance (the pet is the priority) and keep the owner updated. E.g. if we need to visit a vet for a cut paw. This will be actioned and the owner would be notified so I can obtain vet details if not already received.
I am happy providing enrichment actives on walks such as seek and find activities and using public agility courses.
I believe that animals have a better experience with a pet sitter once they have built up trust, therefore I recommend doing pre walk/activity/meeting with the animals where the owner is present so everyone can build on a positive connection and the pet can take their owners lead. I think that positivity is key, and will use owner recommended treats, toys and/or rewards to build a positive relationship with your animal.
I throughly research all locations that I am going to on walks and do a walk around myself prior to using a new location so that I can observe any areas of concern/possible safety issues and identify any extra facilities and exciting opportunities.
A typical pet sitting day:
(Dog example if I am pet sitting for a whole day/overnight)
- Depending on the temperature I will usually decide whether to do an early morning walk, or wait until after peak heat time or both if the pet requires due to energy/activity levels needed.
- If the pet has a first meal I will provide this subject to owner instructions on whether this is before or after any walk or morning activity.
- if I am pet setting for a whole day/overnight a pet will not be left unattended unless the owner requires that the pet has some downtime / alone time to help reduce anxiety and building on positive responses to independence.
- have my own morning meal.
- do some training or enrichment activities with the pet or give lots of cuddles and relaxed down time.
- if the pet has an early afternoon meal I will prepare and provide that along with fresh water.
- afternoon/evening walks/enrichment activities with the pet and any training.
A typical pet sitting walk
(Dog example)
Arrive at owners house before the time of the walk to greet the pet and deal with any on the day questions or queries of the owner.
Take pet for walk. Depending on activity level required by owner this is typically 30 minutes but can be longer if requested by the owner andyl my schedule allows for it.
Engage pet with sniffing/toy/training activities.
Provide a water break.
Return pet home.
I will look after all different types of pets I'm not exclusive to dogs. If your pet has any extra special requirements that's fine just let me know. I look forward to meeting some new furry friends. I will also keep you updated with photos.
